What is it?
ESG is an endoscopic gastric sleeve. This is a non-surgical method of fighting obesity, also known as endoscopic gastroplasty. The procedure is performed under anesthesia using an endoscopic suture system, which allows the stomach to be reduced by as much as 70%-80% without incisions, scars and anatomical modifications. A smaller stomach will hold less food, resulting in weight loss. After the procedure, the patient must follow dietary recommendations. The treatment is reversible – you can cut the threads at any time, which will then be excreted from the body along with food. If after the treatment there will be insufficiently satisfying effects, the procedure can be repeated, reducing the stomach even more.
RESULTS OF THE TREATMENT – weight loss of up to 18.2% of your total body weight in the first year after the procedure.

FAQs
Who is the ESG endoscopic gastric reduction procedure for?
The ESG procedure is a non-surgical treatment for obesity in patients between the ages of 18 and about 60 who may have other underlying conditions. Their general health condition and the results of the required pre-procedural medical examinations must be satisfactory enough to perform the procedure and apply general anesthesia. Like any other bariatric method, ESG requires the patient’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Patients must be willing to make lasting, healthy changes to their diet and exercise regularly to achieve long-term results.
What does the surgery look like?
The operation takes place in a private hospital. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia by a specialized and experienced surgeon assisted by a certified anesthesiologist and nurses. It lasts about 60-90 minutes. The ESG method is minimally invasive and involves reducing the stomach by inserting a thread system using an endoscope. In this way, you can reduce the stomach by up to about 70%-80%. The patient stays in the hospital for two or three days after the procedure.
What is the hospital stay like?
You will be admitted to the hospital on day 1 in the afternoon. Day 1 and part of day 2 are the time for diagnostic tests and pre-treatment consultations. The operation will be performed on day 2. Day 3 is a rest period. Depending on the doctor’s decision and your condition after the procedure, you will be discharged from the hospital on day 3 or 4. After that, we recommend an additional stay of a night or two at a nearby hotel. At the hospital, you will stay in one of the single or double patient rooms. A single room is available at an additional cost. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with TV and Internet access. They also have private bathrooms. During your stay, you will be under the care of a doctor and nurses who will provide all necessary medicines and meals/liquids.
How long is the entire stay in Lodz/Poland?
For your safety and comfort after surgery, we recommend staying in Lodz/Poland for at least 6-7 nights after the surgery. 2-3 of those nights you’ll be in the hospital. We recommend spending the rest of the nights at a nearby hotel or with family/friends if you have any locally. If you can, we recommend extending your stay. It’s worth resting and gaining strength before the journey home. If you are from Lodz or the surrounding areas, you can go home immediately after the hospital stay. If you need a hotel, we will be happy to recommend some tested ones, for example, these recommended hotels in Lodz. Of course, you can also choose any offer from the varied local hotel base. It is important that the accommodation allows you to rest peacefully after your hospital stay.
What are the recommendations after the ESG procedure?
Following the instructions after the procedure is crucial for the success of the treatment. Post-surgery recommendations require a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The patient must make permanent, healthy changes to their diet and exercise regularly to achieve long-term results.
Ailments immediately after the ESG procedure are usually not severe. Nausea and abdominal pain that may occur usually disappear within 1-2 days after the procedure. When it comes to diet, the first days after the procedure may not be the easiest. During the first three days, only liquids should be consumed. A few days after the procedure, after improving the general condition and the appropriate tolerance of the liquid diet, you will be discharged from the hospital. A liquid diet is recommended for the next 14 days. After this period, soft products are introduced. In the 7-8th week, easily digestible meals appear in the diet. During the first weeks, you should additionally use the supplementation recommended by the doctor. The patients receive a complete set of information on further recommendations, including detailed dietary instructions.
The recovery period after the ESG procedure is not long. The vast majority of patients can return to work after about a week. It is important to remember that lifting is contraindicated for about 4-6 weeks after the procedure. 8-9 weeks after the surgery, you should have a check-up with your surgeon and work with a dietitian for at least a year after the surgery.
What are the contraindications for endoscopic gastroplasty ESG?
A contraindication to the ESG treatment is the patient’s lack of will to change eating habits and lifestyle, as well as mental disorders (schizophrenia, severe depression, bulimia, suicidal tendencies), substance abuse or abnormal medical test results. Patients diagnosed with cancer, cardiac problems, blood coagulation disorders or inflammatory processes of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagitis or ulceration) will also not be qualified for treatment by endoscopic gastrectomy. Other contraindications are the presence of foci of potential bleeding (varices), a large hiatal hernia and structural anomalies of the esophagus or pharynx, as well as breastfeeding, pregnancy or planned pregnancy within the next 12 months.
What are the possible complications after ESG surgery?
Each procedure carries a certain level of complication risk. The most common complications after endoscopic gastroplasty, occurring in less than 1% of all procedures, are bleeding from the suture line and inflammatory infiltration in the gastric area. In this case, treatment usually requires re-endoscopy, and surgery is rarely necessary. Based on analyzes of almost 2,000 procedures with this method, the risk of complications is 2.2%. No deaths were recorded.
