What is it?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure of reduction, enlargement, reshaping, narrowing or straightening the nose. It is a very popular plastic surgery procedure that not only reduces or increases the size of your nose, but can also change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or even change the angle between your nose and upper lip. During this procedure the surgeon can also correct a birth defect or injury and help relieve some breathing problems.

Who is it for?

Generally healthy patients who are unhappy with their noses. They are qualified based on photos, blood tests results and a face to face consultation with a surgeon and an anaesthetist.

Surgery info

The surgery is performed under general anaesthetics by a fully-qualified surgeon with the assistance of a certified anaesthetist. It takes place in a sterilized operating room and usually lasts 1-2 hours although some more complicated procedures may take longer. The skin of the nose is separated from the supporting bone and cartilage which is sculpted to the desired shape using the technique your surgeon has decided on. The skin is then redraped over the new framework. Rhinoplasty can be performed from within the nostrils or by using an ‘open’ procedure where a small incision is made across the vertical strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. If your surgery involves bone reshaping, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape.

Possible complications

As you will be treated by an experienced and fully-qualified surgeon the complications are likely to be minor although the rhinoplasty as with any other surgical operation involves some risks. The main ones are: bleeding, infection, burst blood vessels (appear as tiny red spots), deformity. We will be happy to help or advise you in any of those cases.

Post-operative guidelines

Headaches, bruising around the nose and eyes, swelling/puffiness, minor bleeding are normal after rhinoplasty surgery and can be controlled by painkillers. They usually last from ab few days up to a few weeks. Try not to be to active for the first few days. Make sure you get a few days off before going back to your every day activities and/or work. It also might be a good idea to have somebody around in case you need help with anything. Do not blow your nose for the first couple weeks. Around the 7th-10th day after surgery all the dressings, stitches and splints should be removed. For the first month or two avoid strenuous activities such as exercising and sports but also avoid rubbing and touching your nose (important when you put on make up!). You will get more detailed information at a consultation with the surgeon.
